Identify Your Climate
MIXED & DRY- 3B, 4B, 5B

Mixed, dry climates experience seasonal temperature variations and typically experience all four seasons. Season length and level of extremity vary by location. These regions typically receive less than 20 inches of rain annually.

Buildings in mixed, dry locations must be designed to balance conflicting weather conditions. Many mixed climates provide comfortable conditions during transition periods that require very little design intervention, but protection must still be provided from seasonal extreme cold and heat. Adaptable features such as operable shutters or removable awnings can help adapt to unique seasonal needs. Solar control techniques should minimize direct sunlight during summer months, but with careful design, solar gain can be used in winter for passive heating. Sun angle can change drastically by season and must be considered year round. Similarly, layouts should take advantage of summer breezes, but provide protection from the harsh winter wind.
