Identify Your Climate
MIXED & MARINE- 3C, 4C, 5C
Marine climates are temperate climates found on the coast. These areas typically do not have extreme seasons and temperatures remaining relatively mild year round due to the high heat capacity of water. Marine climates only experience two seasons, summer and winter. Summer months are dry, while winter can be very wet. To be considered a marine climate, 65% of annual total rainfall must occur in less than six months of the year. These climates are generally humid, however moisture and precipitation levels can vary greatly by location.
Mild temperatures allow spaces to be naturally conditioned in many circumstances, however humidity can cause discomfort. During the rainy season, ventilation is important to prevent moisture build up and mold. Drought can become an issue during the summer months making water storage and reuse important. Solar gain should be maximized in winter, but minimized in summer.
