Equal opportunity for fair treatment
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares all human beings “equal in dignity and rights.” 1 Unfortunately, the built environment intentionally or unintentionally creates barriers that impede equal opportunity.
But smarter design can rectify this. Planning and urban design can offer equitable access to transportation, green space, and other amenities. Building designers can improve occupant satisfaction by providing healthy and comfortable environments for all occupants, regardless of location or status.
The design, construction and condition of the built environment can directly affect whether people feel fairly treated or not. As designers, we can promote human dignity by creating places that are more responsive and responsible.
